An Ensuite Addition
Serene Spa
The homes existing ensuite was poorly designed with an oversize water closet and shower, leaving no room for a tub and barely any space to walk. With no square footage to steal from, we opted for an addition to this 3-level walkout. The end result? An ensuite over twice as big, a more spacious master bedroom, and a new outdoor living space below.
Finding Space
The homeowners hated how narrow their ensuite was. They could barely walk by one another without a bump or a nudge making tired mornings a frustrating experience. They wanted a more functional space that would give them the freedom to enjoy the space together. Unfortunately, there wasn’t room to spare from their master bedroom or closet, so we proposed an addition. By bumping out their ensuite by 8ft, we gained 113 more sq.ft. in which to create their dream bathroom. To ensure the addition looked seamless with the rest of the home, we also bumped out their master bedroom by 10ft, in turn creating a more spacious retreat.
Comfort Underfoot
To make the best use of the space, we reconfigured the footprint of the shower to make it wider rather than longer. In doing so, we were able to incorporate a bench and three built in niches to keep shower toiletries organized and tucked away so as not to disturb the clean white aesthetic. The unique, penny round tile was extended into the shower making it feel like a natural extension of the space. Elsewhere in the bathroom, electric in-floor heating offered comfort underfoot to elevate the spa experience.
Beautiful Details
Our clients wanted their new bath to be a central feature in the ensuite so we selected a large, free-standing tub with dark wooden feet to pop against the fresh white space. With elegant floor mounted taps, a massive window to offer light, and tile surround, the tub area feels equal parts cozy and luxurious. Opposite, you’ll find a full height turquoise linen closet offering a pop of color, a private water closet with additional storage, and a rustic barn door leading back to the master retreat. Several LED potlights were installed to make the space shine, including three in the dual vanity bulkhead to accentuate the reflection of this gorgeous space.
An Added Bonus
While the addition could have just been added to the ensuite, our clients opted to extend it across the entire rear of the home thereby creating a more spacious master retreat and a new covered deck below. To make the most of it, they designed a cozy outdoor living space complete with a dining table, conversation set and gas fireplace. Finished in warm exotic hardwood, the space was also kept warm by a 10ft overhead heater to maximize it’s usability in all four seasons. Being that the addition was open to the exterior below, it took careful planning to ensure the new spaces plumbing lines were properly insulated so as to maximize energy efficiency and keep everything warm.
More Living Space, More Comfort
In the end, the renovation offered our clients three new areas to enjoy. Their master retreat was totally revitalized and their useable outdoor space greatly enhanced. ‘Serene Spa’ was a finalist at both the 2021 BILD Alberta Awards and 2020 BILD Calgary Awards.
