This kitchen wasn’t just a renovation—it was a complete reimagining of how space, light, and functionality could coexist beautifully in a dated bungalow destined for modern greatness. The homeowners had one clear vision: as soon as someone walked through the front door, the kitchen had to wow. With that guiding goal, we reoriented the layout, knocked down walls, doubled the kitchen’s footprint, and created a striking space that now sets the tone for the entire home.
Let There Be Light
Originally tucked away and hemmed in by dividing walls, the kitchen felt dark, cramped, and disconnected. The transformation began with removing three central walls, including one critical structural wall—a challenge that required opening the exterior of the home to install a large flush beam in the attic. This solution was key to unlocking the open-concept layout, allowing natural light from the front of the house to flow freely. The kitchen was relocated to the west side of the house and expanded to over twice its original footprint. Custom cabinetry—finished in a blend of painted MDF and white oak—brought both warmth and contrast, while thoughtful design details made the space exceptionally functional.
Continuous Finishes
A custom white oak hood fan ties into the island and floating shelves, creating a visual rhythm that feels both curated and coastal. Brass hardware adds a warm, modern touch, playing beautifully off the soft tones of the refinished natural wood flooring—another client priority; rather than replacing the existing floors, we sanded and refinished them, preserving their character while giving them new life. Together with a fresh coat of paint on all the old oak doorways, the bright and light atmosphere of the kitchen now flows throughout the main floor.
No Shortage of Storage
Storage was a major pain point in the original kitchen. We addressed it head-on with drawer banks everywhere—including deep drawers for pots and pans, custom spice pull-outs, and full-height pantry storage. Everything now has a home, and the counters stay clean without sacrificing convenience thanks to: a hidden coffee bar and microwave station, seamless pull-out pantry, and handy retractable spice pull-out. Together with the panel-ready fridge, every detail was curated to give this kitchen a clean and cohesive feel.

This renovation didn’t just meet the client’s expectations—it elevated their everyday experience at home. The result is a bright, airy, and beautifully personalized kitchen that feels at once relaxed and refined. It’s no surprise this project was recognized as a Finalist for the BILD Alberta and BILD Calgary 2023 Best Kitchen Award—a true testament to the craftsmanship and creativity poured into every detail.
