Case Study 5
Beautiful Basement Buildout
Our clients were tired of their cold, dark, undeveloped basement and wanted a beautiful space to complete their stunning home! From one large empty space we masterfully designed a floorplan to allow for numerous distinct spaces, including: a wet bar, hobby room, flex space, entertainment area, 4-piece bathroom, bedroom with walk-in closet, reading nook, and a fully contained mechanical room.
Open Concept Living
Descending this homes beautiful spiral staircase used to feel like you were headed down to a cold, empty storage space. Now, you’re greeted with an array of attention-grabbing features full of clean lines. With rich maple features and glossy Calacatta tile and countertops found at the wet bar and entertainment area, the spaces feel cohesive yet distinct. With a full feature gallery wall, and plenty of space left over to add a pool or poker table, it’s hard to pick where you’ll want to spend your time in this space. To make it feel bright and open, a host of LED potlights were installed throughout, warmed by rich colored LVP flooring.
Utility In Every Space
By removing three of the four walls that formerly surrounded the curved staircase, we were able to make it a proud feature in the basement which could be enjoyed from above or below. To maximize the utility of the curved space, we created a cozy reading nook beneath it. Opposite, a stunning firebox complete with ember glass and driftwood served to cozy up the main seating area. Beyond the sofa, a music room is revealed behind french style barn doors, and a separate hobby room to the left offers some kid friendly space. Tied together with youthful decorative accents, the space feels equal parts inviting and fun.
Complete With Guest Retreat
Take a right at the gallery wall, and tucked away for privacy and peace in this basement you’ll find a classy guest retreat. Home to a queen size bed, seating space, and walk-in closet this once barren corner is now begging for the opportunity to host guests. Adjacent, you’ll find a stunning 4-piece bathroom with more gorgeous maple cabinetry and Calcatta counters. A series of open shelves and vanity drawers offer obvious storage, whilst a mirrored barn door hides yet another 43 square feet of additional storage space. The finished bathroom exudes a luxurious spa feel, most than more can say of their primary ensuite let alone their basement bathroom.
A Cheerful Celebration
The end result was a dramatic transformation from this once undeveloped and underutilized space to a polished, multi-functional third level. ‘Beautiful Basement Buildout’ was a finalist at both the 2021 BILD Calgary Awards and the 2022 CHBA National Awards of Housing Excellence.
